Worthy to be Glorified

Revelation 5: 1 – 14 (11 – 14)

In the next few weeks we shall be going to the polls again. This time to elect the next Prime Minister of Australia. There are going to be quite a few things that we will need to consider as we go to vote, like: party policies, party capability, what that actually stand for and what their agenda is for Australia, and whether they will represent Australia well. As I go to vote I will be considering also, who might be worthy of such a high ranking position?

With this in mind we also need to ask, what qualifies them as worthy? Is it: university qualifications, life and leadership experience, moral standing, their love for Australia or integrity?

On April 16th 2018, there was a meeting of commonwealth representatives to discuss plans of succession in the event of the death of Queen Elizabeth. It was not an open and shut case, for they sought to determine who was worthy to occupy the throne. Eventually they choose Prince Charles. Of the many factors that call into question this suitability, he unilaterally changed his present role which has traditionally been “defender of the faith” to uphold Christian teaching, to “defender of the faiths”, plural, seeking to take no personal position. One may argue that this is appropriate for essentially a political figure, but it just reinforces that there is a unique worthiness to Christ and Christ alone. Only one individual has the right, the power, and the authority to rule the earth: the Lord Jesus Christ.

Today we open up Scripture which is a revelation that the apostle John has on the island of Patmos of the ‘Lamb who was Worthy’, Jesus is the Lamb.

Worthy Is The Lamb!

Holy! Holy!

Are You Lord God, Almighty!

Worthy Is The Lamb!

Worthy Is The Lamb!

You Are Holy!

Agnus Dei – The title Lamb of God (in Latin Agnus Dei) appears in the Gospel of John, with the exclamation of John the Baptist: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”

So lets explore some of what has made Jesus worthy to be glorified.

1/ The Lamb Is Worthy Because Of His Sovereignty v1-5

Revelation 5: 1 – 5, ‘Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside.

5Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” ‘

John saw a book – Literally a scroll that was sealed with seven seals. This scroll was in the right hand of God.

By this point John must have been overwhelmed at all that he has witnessed in Chapters 1-4. But now he encounters a dilemma. He said – “4I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside.”

Angels were not worthy!

Even the Archangels were unworthy!

All Heavenly powers stood silent!

The Prophet’s of old were not worthy!

The Lord’s Apostles were not worthy!

Among all of the Saint’s, no one worthy was found! All of Heaven itself becomes silent and unable at the task of breaking the seals of this scroll.

As they searched through Heaven and Earth and found no one worthy, John’s heart began to break and tears began to flow… Then, one of the Elders said hang on John! There is ONE WHO IS WORTHY!

The Elder said look John…. “One has prevailed” – ‘conquered – gained the victory’.

Christ’s past victory over all the powers of darkness entitles Him the ability and power to break the seals of the scroll!

Jesus has sovereignty, which is also seen in: Revelation 1:8, ‘I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, says the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty’. ………Revelation 4:8, ‘And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come’.

Sovereignty is the full right and power of a governing body over itself, without any interference from outside sources or bodies. Jesus has sovereignty.

2/ The Lamb Is Worthy Because Of His Sinlessness v5

5Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” ‘

Hebrews 4:15 tells us, ‘For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin’. And as Jesus faced temptation in Matthew. 4:1-11, Satan surely thought Jesus would fall. He did not! He faced the temptation and remained sinless!

“Lion of the tribe of Judah”, In Genesis 49, the Jews are promised that a great ruler will arise out of Judah. Like a lion, He will be powerful, strong, brave, and a mighty conqueror.

“The Root of David”. This title reflects both the humanity and the deity of the Messiah.

When Jesus came He was not what the Jews had expected and as a result they rejected Him; John 1:11, ‘He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him’.

Though the Jews did not accept Christ as Messiah, He was that “Sinless” sacrifice sent by God to redeem mankind! – 1 Peter 1:18-19, ‘ For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.’

If He had not been sinless, He wouldn’t have been the Messiah, If He had not been the Messiah, He would not be worthy to open the seals.

3/ Christ Is Worthy Because Of His Sacrifice v6,9

Jesus purchased the victory on the Cross – John 19:30, ‘When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit’. This Lamb that was slain, was slain for us!

This was prophesied in Isaiah 53:4 – 6, ‘Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.

5But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

6We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all’.

This Lamb in Revelation verse 6 still bears the marks of having been slain – When we see Jesus in Heaven, we will see the marks of His suffering in His body. For all eternity, Jesus will bear the wounds of the cross as a constant reminder of what He did for us. There will be no room for pride in Heaven! No one will be able to brag about how he got there. When we see Him, we will see His love on permanent display. And we will say WORTHY IS THE LAMB!!!

The Lamb Is Worthy Because Of His Sovereignty, Sinlessness, Sacrifice and finally we see:

4/ Christ Is Worthy Because Of His Success v9-10

This heavenly choir sang a “new” song! – “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.

10You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign [a] on the earth.”

What is the “success” of this lamb? Revelation 5: 6, ‘Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the centre of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders.’ Notice that He is now “standing”

The Lamb is in Heaven not in a manger, not on a dusty road in Galilee, not on a ship in a storm. He is not hanging in shame and agony on a cross. He is not lying in a cold, sealed tomb.

He is where He deserves to be. He is in the throne. He is glorified and exalted in Heaven!

When Jesus ascended, He “sat down” at the right hand of God, Hebrews 1:3, ‘The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.’ He sat down because His work of redeeming sinners was complete. The Lamb is standing here because His work of delivering the earth is about to begin!

Jesus brought Success Over Death, Hell and The Grave – Revelation 1:18, ‘I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades’. Satan thought he had defeated Jesus when Jesus died on the cross.

Hell must have celebrated as the broken, bleeding, body of Jesus was removed from that cross and placed in that borrowed tomb. What Satan thought was his greatest victory was in fact his greatest defeat! On that third day Christ rose from that Tomb to live forever more!! Because of the Success of the Lamb we have the Hope of Eternal Life!

From these passages my greatest encouragement is to keep in mind that all the praise is centred on the Lord Jesus Christ, the Redeemer. It is not Christ the Teacher or Prophet BUT Christ the Saviour who is the theme of their worship. While an unconverted person could praise the Creator, he certainly could not sincerely praise the Redeemer.

All of heaven’s praise came because the Lamb took the scroll from the Father’s hand. God’s great eternal plan would now be fulfilled, and creation would be set free from the bondage of sin and death. One day the Lamb will break the seals and put into motion events that will eventually lead to His coming again to establish His Kingdom forever.

For those who do not know Jesus as their Redeemer Revelation says, ‘Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me’.
