About Ricky's Place

Ricky's Place is an initiative of the Bega Anglican community, funded by a generous grant from Anglicare.

Ricky's Place offers cheap nutritious meals, a free shower and a place to come and chat with friends or simply "chill out" especially for homeless or disadvantaged people who may be doing it tough.

Located in St. John's Parish Hall and staffed by enthusiastic volunteers from the local churches and the wider local community, Ricky's has served dozens of meals since it opened in August 2009 as well as countless cups of tea and coffee.

Ricky's Place is open on Wednesdays and Fridays between 10am and 2pm for late breakfast and lunch. There are plans before the parish council to open one night a week later in the year. The emphasis has been on providing simple healthy food in a cafe style atmosphere where customers are waited on by volunteers. If they need assistance with a phone call, sorting out who to talk to about a problem or simply a chat, our volunteers are there to help. We believe this personal attention makes Ricky's more than a "soup kitchen" and helps promote the dignity and well being of people who deserve our respect. We hope that Ricky's Place ultimately evolves into a "community hub" providing a variety of services to the customers.

Statistical and anecdotal evidence suggests that Bega has a relatively large population of homeless people compared to state averages. Beyond homelessness, there are many members of the community who might benefit from Ricky's including the elderly, the isolated, minority groups and generally disadvantaged.

In October 2009, a new shower and disabled toilet/bathroom was completed and is now open for use by those with no access to showering facilities.

Ricky's has exciting plans to develop a community garden at the back of an adjacent property that is owned by the Church to provide fresh fruit and vegetables to the kitchen and to the customers. We also hope to provide a collection point for surplus fruit and vegetables in the local community for use in the kitchen and for distribution to those in need.

Ricky's Place is always looking for volunteers to help in the meal service and eventually the gardens. Donations of cash or of goods are greatly appreciated.

Please feel free to drop in and have a cup of tea or coffee when Ricky's Place is open.

Ricky's is for everyone in the community!
